This morning finds me walking the usual steps that I take
A couple of young boys talking and fishing for boots in the lake
I stood and sighed and they nudged each other and smiled
But how carefully they played 'til they watched me walk away
Went past the castle ruins down by the greengrocer's stall
Walked by the fig tree growing out of the old dockside wall
I need to find some roots I left behind
Some place to call my own, home sweet home
How could you do this to me?
You've left me all alone
How could you do this to me?
I'm left without a home
You needed rings so I sold off all my things
Now they're sweeping 'round my feet, on Fairfax Street
The rag week tins are shaking, some students are good for a smoke
A young girl candle-making, but not in the mood for a joke
She sees through me, but just what is it she sees?
Some desperate old man with outstretched hand...
I ride the escalators, keeping myself warm today
The brass band's playing later and some of those coins roll my way
The winter streets are oblivious of me
Old man in tattered clothes who no-one knows
How could you do this to me?
You've left me on my own
How could you do this to me?
I'm left without a home
You wanted pearls, I'd have given you the world
Now they're sweeping 'round my feet, on Fairfax Street
Sometimes the world is just a wilderness
Sometimes the feeling is so strong
Can't get my head around unhappiness
It goes on and on
A girl I often see there whose children were taken away
Steals half a loaf from somewhere, that's all that I've eaten today
Wherever you have taken yourself to
Won't you sometimes think of me?
On Fairfax Street
